St John Baptist Church, is one of four churches in the village and arguably the most dominant and imposing building, despite being tucked away. The church's district was formed in 1874 from portions of Camerton, Dunkerton and Wellow. With the church consisting of a chancel, nave and central turret that contained one bell. In 1880 as the village population grew, the church was expanded, however in 1893 it was dismantled and re-erected in Fishponds, Bristol as the Church of St John Divine.
The current church was built in 1892 from Bath ashlar stone and the organ was transferred from the original church. In 1893 it was consecrated by the Bishop. The church was further extended, adding the North Aisle around 1905. The church was central to village life and as such had a Church Poor Fund, used to help people during the miners' stoppages. Today the church is still active in the community holding many activities including a toy library and toddlers group.
