Geocache Description:

War Memorial cache #87 We will remember them ~ South Hylton.

This memorial is made of grey granite and is of a monument style, it's quite unusual as it's got a square shaped top. The memorial was unveiled 16 August 1924 and hard to imagine the setting like it was in this photo compared to how it is now

This is a multi-cache and can be found a short walk away at N 54 54.ABC W 001 27.DEF by working out the coordinates from the clues below.

A = Number of words in the phrase on the bottom of the memorial
B = Number of heroes on the left side of the memorial
C = Number of letters in the surname of the hero listed lowest on the memorial
D = Number of heroes listed from World War II divided by 8
E = Number of heroes whose surname begins with B on the front of the memorial divided by two
F = From the front of the memorial : Number of heroes with surname beginning with H minus the number of heroes with the surname beginning with M

Checksum for numbers is 16 - note online sites may give you the wrong answers!

There are literally thousands of War memorials around the country. WW1 Memorials were usually raised through public subscription to remember those that gave the ultimate sacrifice. This year 2014 is also the centenary of the start of the First World War it's about time there was a series dedicated to War Memorials. There is an un-numbered series in Scotland called Lest we forget. The name of this series We Shall remember them, was chosen from the very moving poem “For the Fallen” by Laurence Binyon. It is well worth searching out and reading.”
