Finn Malmgren var meteorolog främst verksam vid Uppsala universitet. Han föddes i Göteborg 1895 och efter studier i bl.a Göteborg och Stockholm anställdes han 1916 av den kände professor Axel Hamberg för att arbeta med fältobservationer i observatoriet på Pårtejåkko (1800 möh) i Sarekfjällen. Observationer skulle genomföras flera gånger per dygn varje dag på året under många gånger extrema förhållanden.
Malmgren deltog på Roald Amundsens nästan fyra år långa ishavsexpedition 1922-1925 och vann där sin ryktbarhet som polarforskare.
1928 var Malmgren med i den italienske polarfararen Umberto Nobile luftskeppsexpedition med zeppelinaren Italia. I en storm 29 maj lossnade gondolen från luftskeppet och kraschlandade i havsisen norr om Svalbard, medan ballongen med flera personer ombord fortsatte sin luftfärd. Malmgren överlevde kraschen. Gruppen som kraschat på isen delade upp sig i två, där Malmgren och två andra påbörjade en vandring över packisen för att söka hjälp. Malmgren dog under denna vandring, vilket skildras i skulpturen. Den andra gruppen med bl.a. Nobile blev räddade av ett ryskt fartyg. Tidigare nämnda Amundsen försökte också undsätta gruppen men fick själv sätta livet till då han försvann i sitt flygplan.
Skulpturen visar Malmgrens död på isen hållen av sina kamrater. Packisen illustreras av marmor som nu blivit smutsig och gör det inte lika lätt att föreställa sig isvidderna. Kanske kan Stockholms stad putsa skulpturen lite.

Centrally yet somewhat hidden on the square that bears his name is a sculpture in memory of meteorologist and polar researcher Finn Malmgren who died in the Arctic Ocean. Unfortunately no descriptive sign that tells about him exists, which is partly the reason for making this cache. The cache coordinates are obtained by solving the task below.
Finn Malmgren was meteorologist mainly active at Uppsala University. He was born in Gothenburg in 1895 and after studying in among others Gothenburg and Stockholm, he was hired in 1916 by the renowned Professor Axel Hamberg for working with field observations in the observatory on Pårtejåkko (1800 masl) in the Sarek mountains. Observations were carried out several times a day every day of the year many times during extreme weather conditions.
Malmgren participated on Roald Amundsen's almost four year expedition in the Arctic Ocean 1922-1925 and become a notable polar researcher.
1928 Malmgren participated in the Italian polar explorer Umberto Nobile airship expedition using the zeppelin Italia. In a storm May 29 the gondola broke lose of the airship and crashed in the sea ice north of Svalbard, while the balloon with several people on board continued their air journey. Malmgren survived the crash. The group crashed on the ice split up into two, where Malmgren and two others started a trek over the pack ice to seek help. Malmgren died during this walk, which is shown in sculpture. The other group, including Nobile was rescued by a Russian ship. Aforementioned Amundsen also tried to rescue the group but was himself killed when he vanished in his airplane.
The sculpture shows Malmgren's death on the ice in the hands of his peers. The pack ice is illustrated by the marble that now dis irty, and make it not as easy to imagine the impression och pack ice. Perhaps the City of Stockholm could polish sculpture a little.
