Listed Leeds series (created by StartPlayer) aims to raise awarness of rich historic heritage of Leeds.
Stank Barn Hall is a fifteenth century tithe barn, locate in Beeston close to White Rose Shopping Centre. It is one of the oldest secular buildings in Leeds. It is Grade II* listed and a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
Locals proudly claim that some of the timber used was left over from the construction of the Santa Maria, Niña and Pinta ships that took Christopher Columbus across the Atlantic to America.
The southern end of the barn is known as Major Greathead's Chapel, after Joshua Greathead, a major in Cromwell's army during the Civil War and later involved in the Farnley Wood Plot to overthrow the monarchy, who was believed to have worshipped there.
In 2013 Friends of Stank Hall start a working partnership with Leeds City Council, the owners, which will see a medieval growing garden planted up as part of an Incredible Edible scheme to feed the local community and encourage them to become involved with the site, and hopefully encourage other investment and participation to bring the oldest secular buildings in Leeds, supported by English Heritage, out of dereliction and back into a useful working life.
