It was Robert Frost who used the phrase "Good fences make good neighbours" in his poem Mending Wall. That statement can be true but it isn't always the case. In my near 50 year career as a Land Surveyor, I have seen all too many property disputes and it didn't matter what type of fence it was: good, bad, or otherwise. If the fence wasn't right on the property line, there could be a major dispute between the neighbours. Some fences are meant to keep people and animals out, while others are meant to keep them in, while yet others are meant to keep them in or on a trail or road.

New or Old Post and Rail Fence - You Decide.
The post and rail fence is a simple construction type of fence. Fence posts can be made out of trees cut down and put in place at the appropriate distance. The rails can be made out of longer trees and then nailed to the posts. In a lot of instances, the materials can come from right on site. This particular fence, however, is a brand new one made in the old fashioned way! The posts and rails are all hand fashioned out of western red cedar and the rails are joined to the posts with mortise and tennon joints. No nails are used in the construction. A safe place to view a close-up the fence is at the location noted.
