Geocache Description:

Located on the upper section of the St Kilda Triangle this monument commemorates the Italian born civil engineer who was responsible for many of the early public works located around Melbourne and St Kilda. Approximately 300 metres north of this location you will find the heritage listed Catani Gardens.

Carlo Catani arrived in Australia in 1876. He joined the Department of Lands and Survey as a draftsman who was promoted to engineer. Catani was concerned with the widening and improvement of the River Yarra upstream from Princes Bridge, Melbourne. Through his urging, the scope of the flood mitigation programme was greatly enlarged. Work began in August 1896 and by the winter of 1897 he began to plant elms, oaks and poplars along the left bank and the newly formed Alexandra Avenue. The laying out and planting of the Alexandra Gardens was executed by the Public Works Department under Catani's direction

Other significant works include

The draining of the Koo-Wee-Rup swamp

Roads to Arthurs Seat and to Mount Donna Buang

The Elwood Canal

Murray River levees (Strathmerton district)

Lake Catani on Mount Buffalo

Reclamation and the layout of the St Kilda foreshore

Please be careful while attempting this cache, on sunny weekends you may have to skip this cache due to the high number of muggles. It has enough room for small swaps and trackables. The lid is a "pop top"
