Geocache Description:

This is a series based on the ancient Irish townland system and while the places chosen may seem a little random, they all mean something to me.

A 35mm film canister with only a log so BYOP and parking is available nearby. Please return exactly where found.

The Townland of Altaturk is in the Parish of Kildarton in the Barony of Oneilland West in The County Of Armagh.
The name probably comes from the Gaelic name 'Alt a tuirc' which means 'Height or glen of the Hog or wild boar'.
It measures 284.78 acres making it the 414th largest townland in County Armagh.
It is bordered by Mullanasilla, Rathdrumgran, Drumennis, Drumsavage, Lenalea, Drumbee Beg, Tirnascobe and Mullaghbane.
Features include the now abandoned Wastelands Primary School.

Altaturk has been chosen because it is the townland where my Mum and her family were brought up. They lived on a small farm at the northern tip of Altaturk and I have many good memories visiting Nana and Granda as a child. One of Mum's younger brothers and his family still live in the original house. Mum was also a pupil at Wastelands PS which she often walked the whole way to and back with her brothers and sisters.
