E’ il turno del bridge, uno dei giochi a carte più tecnici, relativamente recente (il regolamento attualmente utilizzato a livello internazionale è del 1925); è l’unico gioco a carte riconosciuto come attività sportiva dal Coni, al pari degli scacchi.
Si gioca a coppie, con un mazzo di 52 carte, con valori di presa decrescenti: asso (A, 14), re (K, 13), donna (Q, 12), fante (J, 11) via via a scendere fino al 2, la cenerentola del gioco. Le carte vengono distribuite a caso tra i 4 giocatori (solitamente identificati con i 4 punti cardinali, nord-sud contro est-ovest) che ne avranno quindi 13 a testa.
Ogni mano i 4 giocatori giocano una carta (si deve rispondere, se possibile, con una carta dello stesso seme di quella giocata per prima). La carta più alta del seme inizialmente giocato (o del seme di briscola, se ne sono state giocate) determina chi effettua la presa, che sarà anche il primo a giocare la mano successiva.
Caratteristica del brigde è che, prima del gioco a carte vero e proprio, le due coppie, dopo aver visto ciascuno le proprie carte, svolgono una sorta di asta (chiamata licitazione) per aggiudicarsi il diritto alla scelta del seme di briscola, impegnandosi ad eseguire un determinato numero di prese (impegno chiamato “contratto”).
Il punteggio premia il rispetto del contratto, così che una delle grosse difficoltà del gioco consiste nel valutare con precisione il numero di prese possibili senza sapere le carte in mano al proprio compagno (ma deducendole dalle sue dichiarazioni in fase di licitazione).
Nella versione del bridge da torneo le squadre sono composte da quattro giocatori, divisi in due coppie, che giocano alternativamente partite con le stesse distribuzioni di carte, così da eliminare quasi completamente la componente fortuna dall’esito della partita.
L’Italia ha sempre avuto una grande tradizione nel bridge, e un ottimo palmares, dominando la scena internazionale dagli anni 50 ai 70 con il famoso “blue team”. Anche a Milano sono numerosi i circoli dedicati a questo gioco.

Bridge is one of the world’s most famous card games, very technical, defined in its current rules in 1925. It is worldwide recognized as a mental sport, like chess. It is played by 4 players in two competing partnerships. They are usually referred as the cardinal directions: N, E, S, W (O in Italian).
Each player receives 13 charts of a shuffled 52 french cards deck. The value of the cards is going from 14 (the Ace) to 13 (the King), 12 (the Queen), 11 (the Jack) down to the 2, the "Cinderella" of the game.
On each turn each player plays a card, “following suit” (you are obliged, if possible, to play the same suit of the first card played in that turn). The player who played the highest card of this suit (or the highest trump, if present) wins the trick and will be the first to play next turn (determining its suit).
Particular of bridge is auction phase: before actually playing cards, the two pairs bid in order to ensure the right to choose the trump suite, declaring the number of tricks that they’ll be able to win. The final declaration (followed by three “pass” of the other players) will define the trump suite and the number of tricks that the pair will get at least in order to win the game; this is called the “contract”.
One of the most difficult things in bridge for a pair is to find the best contract possible without knowing the cards of the partner: the only information is coming from his declarations during the bidding.
In the tournament version of bridge the players are four for each team (two pairs), and the cards received by each pair in a game are given to the adversaries of the other pair in next game, so that fortune impact on the game is extremely reduced.
Italy has always played an important role in the international Bridge scenery, and the its famous “blue team” has been the best one during 50’ to 70’ years.
