Southampton Common is a large open space around 1.6 miles to the north of the city centre of Southampton. Southampton Common is the largest open space within the City boundaries. Southampton Common is 326 acres, it includes areas of woodland, parkland, rough grassland, ponds, wetlands, nature trails, a paddling pool, a children's play area, a model yachting pond and a fishing lake. There is also a pub, a café and a couple of ice cream stalls within the park. It’s a great place for a walk in the heart of the City.
Southampton Common is split into three sections by two roads, The Avenue and Highfield Lane. The cache is on the smaller Highfield side of the common; a subway links the Highfield and Shirley sides of the common.
Parking is restricted on the common, parking is available in parking bays on Cemetery Road but these are some distance from the cache. Alternatively you can use on street parking in the streets surrounding the common. Please be aware there are parking restrictions on a number of these streets. There are frequent bus routes to Southampton Common.
The cache is at a place of historical interest called Cutthorn Mound which is in one of the less busy corners of the common. The cache is accessible by the smaller, non-tarmacked, pathways.
This is a simple, traditional, “cache and dash”. The logbook is in a small bison style microcache container within a disguised outer container. There is no room for geoswag inside the outer container. You will need to bring your own pen for the log book and perhaps something to remove the log from the bison container.
There is a “first to find” badge within the outer container for the first person to discover the cache.
Please return the cache, re-assembled, to where you found it. Please let us know if there are any issues with the cache (log book full, etc.).
The site is a protected historical site so please ensure no damage is done to the fabric of the site, particularly digging (which is, of course, unnecessary for the cache)
Permission for this cache has been obtained from Andy Welch the Land Management Ecologist for Southampton City Council. Thank you Andy.
Happy geocaching!
