Geocache Description:

Welcome to Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site of Canada! This series highlights some of the special and interesting species at risk that share our province with us. Kejimkujik is home to over 20 species at risk that are live in the forests, freshwater, wetlands and seaside coasts of the park.

Canada Warbler The Canada Warbler (or “sisip” (bird) in Mi’kmaw) is a small-sized songbird (12-15 cm long) with a brilliant yellow throat, breast, and belly, decorated with a necklace of black stripes. The Canada Warbler breeds in Nova Scotia from early June to mid-August and you can listen for its loud, clear song in forested wetlands throughout Kejimkujik. Canada is a significant breeding location for this species and approximately 80% of the world’s Canada Warblers breed in Canada! This species is listed as “Threatened” under the Species at Risk Act, and has declined by 85% over the last 40 years. It is impacted by overwintering and breeding habitat loss (it is estimated that 90% of its overwintering habitat has been lost), habitat fragmentation (such as forestry activities), road development, and declines in insect outbreak cycles. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Plus de 20 espèces en péril peuplent les forêts, les eaux douces, les milieux humides et les zones littorales du parc Kejimkujik.

Paruline du Canada La paruline du Canada, ou sisip en mi’kmaw (ce qui signifie « oiseau »), est un oiseau chanteur de petite taille (de 12 à 15 cm de longueur) qui se reconnaît à sa gorge, à sa poitrine et à son ventre jaune vif ainsi qu’à son collier de bandes noires. La paruline du Canada niche en Nouvelle-Écosse du début de juin à la mi-août. Son chant fort et clair se fait entendre dans les nombreux milieux humides boisés du parc national Kejimkujik. Le Canada revêt une très grande importance pour cette espèce : environ 80 % de la population mondiale y niche! La Loi sur les espèces en péril a attribué le statut d’espèce menacée à cet oiseau, dont les populations ont connu un déclin de 85 % dans les 40 dernières années. L’espèce souffre de la disparition de ses lieux d’hivernage et de nidification (il est estimé que 90 % de son territoire hivernal a disparu), de la fragmentation de son habitat (notamment par l’exploitation forestière), de la construction de routes et du déclin des infestations d’insectes.
