Geocache Description:

This Geocache is one in a series placed by the Quonochontaug Historical Society (QHS).  The QHS geocaches commemorate historical places and events in the Quonochontaug, RI area.

The West Beach area is an important part of the Quonochontaug community.

Mother Brindley’s Store
Mother Brindley came from London originally to work in the Bradford Dye Works.  In the 1920’s and 1930’s she had a store on West Beach, selling ice cream, candy and soda to summer visitors.  Her unique and comical personality left a lasting impression and a significant place in Quonnie history.  As you stand near the geocache location, note the home named in Mother Brindley’s honor at the intersection of West Beach and West End roads.

Eldridge Casino
The Eldridge Family owned both a boarding house and the Casino on West Beach.  Bowling was popular during the summer months at the Casino.  After it was moved by the ’38 Hurricane, the Eldridge Casino was brought back to its original location, near where the West Beach Tennis Association tennis court is now located.  During the 1940’s and 1950’s, even though the alleys had warped,  the Eldridge Casino provided endless hours of challenging bowling to the young people in the area.

Please sign the geocache log! Each visitor is welcome to take a copy of the postcard with an old photo of Mother Brindley’s Store and a photo of the Eldridge Casino.

Parking for this geocache is available at the Quonochontaug Pond Breachway recreation area.  From Route 1 in Charlestown, take West Beach Road to the intersection at the end, and turn right towards the breachway.  After approximately .2 miles, look for a dirt parking area on the left adjacent to the breachway.  Please do not park along the road itself.   The geocache is located about .2 miles from the parking area.
