The Mackay Historical Society was formed in 1972, in 1981 Greenmount homestead was bequethed to the society and was opened to the public in 1984. A combined management committee was formed n 1997 which obtained a large grant to restore Greenmount homestead but it meant that the Society had to move its archives and collection elsewhere.
The Society built a shed to store its belongings and the old single mans quarters originally from Marian Mill was moved from Greenmount to this site to be used as a Museum. With the complete refurbishment of the building the members spent 18 months preparing the collection ready for opening in April 2004.
