Geocache Description:

29 August 2015, 00:00 - 13:00

As always, the day will begin with an event from 9 AM to 10:30 AM for the breakfast and discussion. The breakfast will be held at the Gateway Restaurant. There will be open discussion of the abandoned turnpike, its history and geocaching along the trail. Upon the conclusion of this event, everyone is invited to continue the day with us as we make our way to the parking area of the Abandoned Turnpike for take the group photo and a day of hiking and/or biking the abandoned turnpike.

Whereas the event officially concludes at 10:30, there is an entire day’s worth of adventure waiting for you after the event. More information about the hike and bike will be shared at the event. The entire trail is over 9-miles long, end to end, though those hiking will not be completing the entire trail in one take. Those biking can expect the ride to take roughly 3 to 5 hours, depending on your pace. Those of us doing the hike will likely take all day. Comfortable shoes are a must. There are two abandoned tunnels along the trail to explore, as well as discovering the inner workings of the old tunnels.

WARNING: In past years, we had several people blow tires, break chains, or crash due to the crumbling pavement on the road. Please come prepared!!! Last year we had about 70+ people at this event and it was a hoot. In the past, we have encountered the undead while in the tunnels. This year, I cannot guarantee that we will have zombies in the tunnels... or can I? MUAHAHAHAHAHA! Please note, due to changes in the event listing guidelines, this event officially only includes the breakfast. If you have any difficulties making it for the event and want to meet us for the hike/bike only, you are welcome to join us. Please ask for theRichFather when you find the group for more instructions.

***UPDATE AS OF JULY 15, 2015*** I have confirmed that Russ Love will once again be joining us this year. Russ will be explaining the South Penn Railroad and how it works with the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Russ will also be showing us the railroad right of ways, the culverts, and so on that the South Penn Railway excavated before the project was abandoned. A lot of the right of way is still accessible easily from the trail. Please bring appropriate shoes if you are heading off into the woods to see the South Penn infrastructure! - Rich

***UPDATE FOR 8/4/15.***

Dr. Curt Miner, chief curator with the Pa. State Museum will also be joining us to speak on behalf of the Pa. Turnpike and the State Museum. Curt has been amazing in planning, coordinating, executing, etc. the Pa. Turnpike display in the transportation exhibit of the Museum.

***UPDATE FOR 8/25/15***

Just got off the phone with the PTC and the Gateway restaurant. The PTC is sponsoring a room at the Gateway after the breakfast to hold our presentation and slide show. Dr. Miner will be bringing goodie bags for the group courtesy of the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission. The presentation will be approximately 15-20 minutes immediately following the breakfast and before we head out on the trail.

***URGENT MESSAGE***

Due to a permission issue at the last minute, cars will not be allowed on the trail for the event, per Don Schwartz of the Bedford County Planning Commission and Board Member of the Southern Alleghenies Conservancy.
