Geocache Description:

Another geocache that honors Calgary's history and more specifically, Calgary's first publicly operated airport, the Stanley Jones Airport which also happened to be Canada's first airport with runway lighting that allowed twilight landings on it's grass runways. The Stanley Jones Airport was developed by the city of Calgary on a parcel of land that the city bought in 1928 and ceased operations in 1940 when the new Calgary International Airport opened for operations. The only remaining structure from this airfield in the Rutledge Hangar located just to the west of this geocache - this hangar was built in 1929 and today serves as a part of the Renfrew location for the Calgary Boys and Girls Club (leased from the city of Calgary). Rutledge Hangar was formally recognized as one of Canada's Historic Places on May 21, 2003 - link. Further information on the Rutledge Hanger can also be found here.

When one looks at the first overhead aerial picture below, it can be seen that all of the community of Renfrew that is located north of 8th Avenue NE and east of 6th Street NE was developed on these airport lands with the exception of the Stanley Jones School located to the south of the airport buildings and which still stands and is in use to this day. The second picture is another aerial picture taken looking to the west towards the airfield one can see the Rutledge Hangar in the upper middle portion of this picture.

As this cache is a camouflaged micro (credit card sized metal gift box), it will only have space for a small log - you will have to bring your own pen or pencil as this cache is too small to contain any type of writing instrument. It will probably be able to accommodate only the smallest trackables and/or tradeables - please use stealth when retrieving this geocache so as to remain unseen by any nearby muggles.

There is plenty of parking available on the nearby streets. Please leave this geocache in the spot you found it with all associated camouflage (if there) in place so as to make the search just as much fun for the next person.
