Obstacle Golf from Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
Obstacle Golf is one of the many complex and equipment heavy games played by people of the World State. These games are literaly pastimes, an occupation to keep the masses from critical thought. The dystopian setting of Brave New world has a government which encourages bland uniformity and extreme consumerism, so all sports involve delicate equipment which requires regular replacement and upgrading. However the games played with this elaborate kit are devoid of any actual skill so that everyone can succeed. So all players, however inept, merely by participating automatically have the satisfaction of achievement and apparent prowess.
We note that there is an app game using the name Obstacle Golf, which promises 'addictive levels'
