Arthur Meighen (pronounced MEE-yin) was born in Perth South, Ontario and educated in Toronto. He graduated from law school and moved to Manitoba (for the second time) in 1900. In 1908 he was elected to federal Parliament, representing the Portage la Prairie riding, a position he held until 1921. When Unionist Party leader Robert Borden resigned on July 7, 1920, Meighen became the ninth Prime Minister of Canada, and the first to be elected from Manitoba (a distinction he alone holds to this day). He served in that capacity for the remainder of his government’s term in office, before being defeated in an election at the end of 1921. He served as Leader of the Opposition until 1926, when the sitting Prime Minister lost the confidence of Parliament and was replaced with Meighen for a second term. Meighen in turn lost confidence three months later and was removed as Prime Minister. In total, he served as Canada’s Head of Government for 20 months.
