Geocache Description:

St Anne's Church, in the lovely village of Epwell dates all the way back to the 13th & 14th Centuries. Built from local ironstone, St Anne's is an ancient Church, sleeping peacefully on a rising mound in the centre of the village, where you can almost imagine sheep grazing in the peaceful grassy churchyard, and is one of the six Wykeham Benefice Churches within a three mile radius.

St Anne's Church Epwell

It is a family joke with Team Lankidden that Epwell either does not exist, or moves around the countryside deceiving any strangers, or Cachers, attempting to find it. The road signs always seem particularly misleading, and most footpaths while threatening to pass through or close by seem never to arrive. Part of the reason would seem to be that while once an important village on the main road from Banbury to Shipston on Stour, it was by-passed by the construction of the Toll road, which we nowadays know as the B4035. All this means that to those fortunate enough to live in this assuredly fictional village, or to imagine that they have actually overcome all misdirections to find it, Epwell today is rumoured to be a beautiful peaceful Ironstone village. For all of the above reasons, we were inclined to award Terrain & Difficulty ratings of four or five star, but felt this might be a tad misleading, and unfair to all the actual four and five star ratings out there ! !

The Church of England parish church of Saint Anne is the main sacred location in Epwell. The church was originally built in the Early English style although some of the existing windows were constructed in Decorated Gothic style. The perpendicular Gothic bell tower was also added to the church at a later date. Two of the windows located on the north side of the church were also installed later in the 16thcentury, and today the church is a Grade II listed building.

Parking is relatively easy quite close to St Anne's. The Cache is not placed within the Churchyard, and so it is not necessary to enter, although you may want to stroll around before or after locating the Cache.  Please make sure to replace it hidden as well as you found it !
