John Thomson (1840-1930)

Husband of Margaret J. Matheson Thomson, and father of ten: George, Elizabeth, Henry, Louise, Minnie, Tom, Ralph, James, Margaret and Fraser.

John was considered a handsome man with a strong tenor voice.  He was a graduate of the Whitby Grammar School, and helped his children with their grammar and mathematics.   A Principled and morally rigid disciplinarian.  “With him right was right and wrong was wrong, there could be no compromise.”  And: “Father was stern, yet very just and kindly, and we all love and revere his memory.” (Minnie Thomson in a letter to Blodwen Davies, February 2, 1931) Reference: tomthomsonart.com/letters/minnie-thomson-blodwen-davies-february-2-1931

John moved his family to Leith, Ontario in 1877 after he bought 100 acres with a house and barn for $6600.00.  Many nights were spent with music in the Thomson household.  All of the Thomson children were musicians of one sort or another and almost all of the family drew or painted.
