Geocache Description:

The cache is placed close to the beacon on Square Tower Peak in Jonkershoek Nature reserve. From the entrance gate the most obvious peaks is the Twin Peaks to the left of the range. The impressive appearance of these two peaks minimizes the Square Tower Peak.

This peak is not visited very often. When a hiker called for some advice on how to get down from the peak, the expert reply was somewhat like this “What are you doing of up there? Nobody ever goes there!” As stated by Ralph Pina “Minimal investment, high returns”

The true peak is 1132 m above sea level. From the gate as the crow flies the distance is 2.3 km at a bearing of 61 degree from North (true). The total ascent is 860 m from the gate. Hiking distance 7.1 km depending on the route taken up.
From some sources the description is that there are a few routes to the Square Tower and Twin Peaks. All indicate that caution must be used. Some maps indicate that the route is dangerous and some that the routes should be taken with a guide. Please head the warning as there is not a laid out hike route to the Square Tower peak. Lots of lose stones and steep gradients. With caution the routes is do-able.
The Square Tower Peak cache was attempted from the gate using the forest road to go up towards the Jonkers Lookout Bench (GC1VV3P). At the top of the “saaltjie” turn right. A mere 900 m further the not so impressive peak is reached. Follow the waypoints as a guide to the cache as there is no trail and the few beacons not too visible. This is the “dangerous” part of the hike. Please be careful when attempting it.

The Peak is laying south east from the “saaltjie” The cache is placed south east to the beacon in a crack of the same boulder the beacon is built on.
The way down was taken back to the “saaltjie” with caution. From there it was plain sailing via a combination of forestry roads and MTB routes. This will take you past some other caches and a beautiful forest.
