
Brojem učenika, bila je jedna od najvećih srednjih škola u Hrvatskoj, a svojim radom najpoznatija. Nakon Drugog svjetskog rata, predratna kvaliteta rada u školi podignuta je na još višu razinu. Škola je uživala ugled jedne od vodećih srednjih škola u Hrvatskoj i služila kao ogledni model obrazovnim ustanovama u Šibeniku.
Ime je dobila po Antunu Vrančiću, crkvenom veledostojniku, latinisti, povjesničaru, arheologu, diplomatu, kraljevskom namjesniku (Šibenik, 30.V.1504. – Prešov, 15.VI.1573). ). Vrhunac svoje moći i uspona Antun Vrančić doživljava 1572. kada postaje kraljevski namjesnik za Ugarsku i Hrvatsku. Nekoliko dana prije smrti, primio je papino pismo u kojem mu javlja da ga je zbog njegovih zasluga za kršćansku Europu imenovao kardinalom.
Antun je bio jedan od najumnijih ljudi svoga doba i najglasovitiji Vrančić. Nije bio samo sposoban diplomata već i autor mnogih znanstvenih i književnih djela iz povijesti, povijesne geografije, arheologije i etnografije. Najvrjednije je djelo „O događajima u Ugarskoj“.
