Lei Yue Mun is rich in granite. In the early 19th century, it used to produce granite from the famous quarry, which supplied the stones for urban construction.
Since the cession of Hong Kong to Britain in 1842 after the ratification in the Treaty of Nanking, there was a great demand of stone production for the construction of stone architectures in the Victoria City, this led to the boom of stone quarry grinding industry in Hong Kong and resulting in an influx of Hakka people to Hong Kong and Lei Yue Mun. They laboured in the quarries, or worked as farmers to earn their livings.
At that time, Lei Yue Mun, Ngau Tau Kok, Cha Kwo Ling and Xia Cao Wan were mountainous areas well known for the production of stone quarries in Kowloon. Stone quarry grinding was the pillar industry of these areas. The Hakka people there formed alliance and named it "Four Mountain".
It was said that the Former Legislative Council, the old Bank of China building in Central, or even Sacred Heart Cathedral in Guangzhou, were all built with the granite from "Four Mountain".
In 1965 the Government stipulated a policy applicable to the quarries of Lei Yue Mun, which quarrying licences were not extended upon expiry. This brought the hundred-odds years old industry to an end and began to develop a reputation as a good spot for seafood dining.
Now, instead of producing granite, Sam Ka Tsuen Old Quarry is a famous place for photo lovers. Having the remaining ruins, stones, sea view and miscanthus (in winter), you may see brides and bridegrooms, models, cosplay lovers, or even people taking movies!
Note: There are some dogs along the way. It is NOT RECOMMENDED to go there at night. Take your own risk.
