Geocache Description:

One of the hidden gems of Grand Bahama, Owl's Hole is one of two access points to a huge underwater cave system. Snorkeling is possible, but only try scuba with a guide. It is about one and a half miles down a dirt road, plus a short foot trail through the bush. Accessible by foot, mountain bike, 4WD vehicle, or car with a high wheelbase.

This is my third cache on beautiful Grand Bahama. The other two are on beaches that are regularly visited by tourists, but this one is a bit more difficult to get to. It's worth the effort though. You'll be visiting the entrance to a huge underwater cave system. The other entrance is in Lucayan National Park. A metal ladder takes you down to the water, so you can swim and snorkel, but please don't disturb the nesting owl, or go cave diving without an experienced guide. You should be able to find one with some Googling if you are so inclined.

The easiest approach is on a dirt road from the North. (See Google Maps.) The road gets worse as you get closer to the cache, so depending on your vehicle you may have to stop and walk at some point. Look for a trailhead just south of a small parking area.

The approach from the south is more scenic as you get to see Old Freetown Beach. It's one of the loveliest beaches on the island and is usually deserted, so it's a great place for skinny-dipping.

You will need a vehicle to get to the trailhead waypoint. It's also possible to cycle there from Freeport, but it's a long ride. You can drive down the dirt road to the beach if you have a high wheelbase vehicle, and there is room to park there. Walk along the beach and cut back into the bush later. Use your GPS to get to a point on the beach south of the cache and look for a cluster of bottles hanging from a tree marking the trailhead that cuts through the bush to a dirt road. Make sure you know what poisonwood looks like, and don't touch any.

I don't want you to go to all the effort of hiking into the bush and then have a DNF, so please use the hint if you can't find the cache easily. You don't need to go into the hole to get it. Please replace the camo as you found it.

In your walking you may see areas of burned vegetation. Don't be upset by these. Brush fires are part of the normal ecological cycle here in the Northern Bahamas. In fact, the unique Caribbean Pine forest would not survive without them.

Note that the roads shown on Google Maps in many cases don't exist any more, so don't rely on them. Freetown was originally a community of freed slaves. Old Freetown was bulldozed fifty or so years ago, and the residents moved to a beautiful new township just down the coast. There is occasionally talk of developing this area as a resort, so enjoy the solitude and unique features while you can.

Bring water and sunscreen!

UPDATE, Nov 24, 2015: The original cache disappeared, so I have replaced it by on with better camo, that may be harder to find - use the hint! The trail is getting overgrown, and may have some downed trees thanks to Hurricane Matthew, so the southern route is no longer recommended for bikes, though walking is fine.

UPDATE, Feb 2, 2019: The cache disappeared again, so I have replaced it with one that has different camo. The southern route has been cleared, can now be used by mountain bikes or motor vehicles with a high wheelbase. USE THE HINT IF YOU CAN'T FIND THE CACHE!

Update Jan 5, 2020. The cache was lost in Hurricane Dorian, so I have replaced it. The dirt road that used to run along the beach has washed away in places and been blocked by falling trees in other, so I have updated the description accordingly. You can still use the southern approach if you walk along the beach, but the northern route is easier.
