Devil's mountain Amariyama wanted a challenger
伝説よ再び‥。
甘利山の中腹には、椹池（さわらいけ）がある。標高1,240m、面積約1ha、特異な景観を持つ楕円型の池である。山梨県では珍しい高層湿原といわれる地形であって、湿原特有の植物が生育し、珍しい動物、昆虫の生息地であったが、現在はすっかり開発されて、自然の特質がかなり失われてしまったのが惜しまれるが、この池を舞台にした有名な伝説は今も残っている。
この池には、昔大蛇が住んでいた。その頃の椹池は、うっそうとした森林に囲まれ、昼尚暗い、物凄い場所であった。池の底深く住んでいた大蛇は、この場所に近づくもの、この池で漁をするものを次々と引き込んで、呑み込んでしまうので、人々は恐ろしい池として、誰一人近寄るものも無かった。
この大蛇の前身は、下条婆（げじょばんば）と呼ばれる老婆であった。巨摩郡下條村（現韮崎市藤井町）に住んでいた老婆が、ある朝のこと、髪を梳こうとして鏡をのぞくと、意外にも彼女の額（ひたい）には、鬼の角の様なものが二本生え出していたのである。老婆はひどく驚き悲しんで、この様な姿を、息子や嫁や近所の人に見られてはならないと、手拭で頭を包んで自殺しようと家出をしてしまった。
裏山の笹松というところに登り、七里岩を越えて、青木の鷹の田（たかんた）の池に身を投げようとしたが、水が浅くて果たせず、鐘をつき念仏を唱えながら、鳥居峠を越え、鐘つき平を経て、甘利山中に分け入り、椹池に達して、とうとう入水してしまった。この下条婆が化身して、池中に住みつき、大蛇になったという。
天文年間（1532-1555）、山麓甘利郷の領主、甘利左衛門尉の二人の息子が、この椹池で鮒（ふな）を釣っていると、突然、大蛇が現れて、二人の子供を池に引き込んでしまった。二人の子供の遺骸を見つけることも出来なかったので、甘利氏は大いに怒って、領民に命じて、下肥え、汚物を池に投げ込ませ、また池の周りに生えていた椹（さわら）の木を切って、池を埋めたので、遂に大蛇は居たたまらずに赤牛に化けて、池を飛び出し、甘利山の山頂の奥にある大笹池（おおささいけ）に身を隠した。けれども、この池も追われて、大蛇は大嵐（現白根町）の善応寺を通って、中巨摩郡八田村野牛島の能蔵池（のうぞういけ）に逃れ、以来その消息を絶ったという。
椹池の伝説は今尚、形を変えながら語り継がれている。
そして現在…。
この山の麓にある工業高校の生徒は毎年頂上まで駆け登る。
彼らはこう呼ぶ。「魔の山」と…。

There is a sawara pond (椹池) in Mt. Amari's(甘利山) side.

A pond of the oval type with the peculiar view.
They're unusual high-rise wetlands in Yamanashi-ken.
The plant to which wetlands are peculiar grew naturally and was a habitat of unusual animal and insect, but unfortunately, most has been lost by development at present.
But the famous legend done by taking place in this pond isn't lost.
Once upon a time a big snake lived in this pond.
The vicinity was circled in a deep forest, and the time was also a dark place at noon.
The big snake the bottom in a pond lived deeply killed the person who approaches a pond and the person who tries to go fishing one after another, so people were afraid and didn't come near.
Previous existence of this big snake was gejobanba and a called old woman.
Her head has sprouted the horns of a demon, so to commit suicide, she has run away.
She drowned by a pond and died.
The big snake into which she changed killed two princes, so a king got angry and drove a big snake.
A legend doesn't end!!!
A student of the industrial high school in the base in this mountain runs to the top every year.
They call this mountain ....."The pile of the devil".
