Σε κάποιους - που κοιτάζουν αυτό το γλυπτό μπροστά στον Κόλπο Μιραμπέλλου και με τα όρια της Θρυπτής στον ορίζοντα – αυτό τους το φαίνεται να είναι το πλοκάμι ενός τεράστιου χταποδιού ή - κυρίως στη νύχτα - η Ολυμπιακή Φλόγα. Μόνο αυτοί που ξέρουν λίγο την Ελληνική Μυθολογία το κοιτάζουν σωστά:
Το γλυπτό παρουσιάζει ΤΟ ΚΕΡΑΣ ΤΗΣ ΑΜΑΛΘΕΙΑΣ!
Ο ΔΙΑΣ ο γιος του ΚΡΟΝΟΥ και μετά ο κυρίαρχος του Όλυμπου, μεγάλωνε σ' ένα σπηλαίο στην Κρήτη και φροντιζόταν από την κατσίκα ΑΜΑΛΘΕΙΑ. Πρώτα τον θήλαζε και μετά ο μικρός Δίας πήρε το κέρας της για να πίνει νέκταρ και την ΑΜΒΡΟΣΙΑ, την τροφή των αθανάτων. Το ΚΕΡΑΣ ΤΗΣ ΑΜΑΛΘΕΙΑΣ έγινε το μυθολογικό σύμβολο για την επιτυχία.
Όμως, τι έγινε, όταν ο κυρίαρχος του Όλυμπου βρισκόταν σε τέτοια άσχημη κατάσταση στην παιδική του ηλικία;
Ο πατέρας του, ο Κρόνος, καταβρόχθισε όλα τα παιδιά του, γιατί φοβήθηκε ότι θα τον ρίξουν από την εξουσία, όπως το έκανε ο ίδιος στον πατέρα του, τον Ουρανό. Λοιπόν, όταν η γυναίκα του, η Ρέα κατάλαβε, ότι ήταν έγκυος για τον Δία, τον έκρυβε. Τον γέννησε σε ένα σπήλαιο, αλλά ο Κρόνος την έψαξε μόλις ανακάλυψε την απουσία της. Όταν την βρήκε, είδε το τυλιγμένο μωρό και το απαίτησε. Η Ρέα ήταν προετοιμασμένη για αυτή την στιγμή και του έδωσε μια τυλιγμένη πέτρα. Η Ρέα του ζήτησε να μείνει λίγο στο σπήλαιο για να ξεκουραστεί από την γέννηση. Μόλις που έφυγε ο Κρόνος, έδωσε η Ρέα το μικρό Δία στην κατσίκα Αμάλθεια για να τον φροντίζει.
Όταν είχε μεγαλώσει ο Δίας, ήθελε να νικάει τον πατέρα του. Πρώτα βρήκε ένα τρόπο να ξαναφτύσει ο Κρόνος τα αδέλφια του. Μετά τα αδέλφια πολεμούσαν τους Τιτάνες ...

Watching this sculpture in front of Mirabello Bay with the Thripti mountains at the horizon, some of you may imagine the tentacle of a huge octopus or - mainly in the night - the Olympic Flame. Only those who know some of the Greek mythology will interpret right:
The sculpture shows the HORN OF AMALTHEA.
ZEUS, the son of CRONOS and later the head of the Olympus, was nursed by the goat AMALTHEA in a Cretan cave. At the end of the lactation little Zeus used the HORN OF AMALTHEA for drinking nectar or AMBROSIA, the food which makes immortal. The HORN OF AMALTHEA became the mythological symbol for good fortune.
But what did happen to Zeus, that he found himself in this strange situation?
His father Cronos gobbled down all his kids, because he was predicted that one of his children would overthrow him one day. As Cronos overthrew his father Uranos, so he was afraid that the same would happen to himself. When his wife Rhea found out to be pregnant with Zeus, she did hide the baby and Zeus was born in a cave on Crete. When Cronos discovered the absence of Rea, he was looking for her. When he found her, he saw the wrapped baby. But Rhea was well prepared and gave a similar wrapped stone to Cronos, which he gobbled down. Rhea told Cronos, that she would stay for a while in the cave to recover from the birth. When Cronos has left, she gave little Zeus to the goat Amalthea for nursing and growing him up.
Grown up, Zeus found a way to make Cronos to spew out his brothers and sisters. From then they started their fight against the Titans ...

Manch einer, der diese Skulptur vor dem Hintergrund der Mirabello-Bucht und dem Gebirgszug des Thripti betrachtet, erkennt darin den Tentakel eines übergroßen Oktopus oder – vor allem in der Nacht – eine Flamme des Olympischen Feuers. Nur, wer ein wenig in der griechischen Mythologie bewandert ist, sieht es sofort:
Hier ist dem HORN DER AMALTHEA ein Denkmal gesetzt.
ZEUS, Sohn des KRONOS und später der Herrscher des Olymps, wurde in einer Höhle auf Kreta von der Ziege AMALTHEA gestillt und aufgezogen. Nach dem Ende der Stillzeit nahm er aus dem HORN DER AMALTHEA Nektar und die unsterblich machende Götterspeise AMBROSIA zu sich. Das HORN DER AMALTHEA wurde zum mythologischen Symbol des Glücks.
Aber wie kam der Herrscher des Olymps in seiner Kindheit in diese Lage?
Sein Vater Kronos verschlang all seine Kinder, da ihm prophezeit wurde, dass eines seiner Kinder ihn eines Tages stürzen würde. Er hatte Angst, von diesem Kind, genau wie sein Vater zuvor von ihm selbst, entmachtet zu werden. Als seine Frau Rhea merkte, dass sie mit Zeus schwanger war, versteckte sie das Kind. Sie gebar Zeus in einer Höhle und als Kronos bemerkte, dass Rhea weg war, suchte er sie. Als er sie fand, sah er das eingewickelte Kind. Er verlangte das Kind, und Rhea gab ihm einen eingewickelten Stein, da sie vorgesorgt hatte. Rhea bat Kronos, noch in der Höhle bleiben zu dürfen, um sich von der Geburt zu erholen. Als Kronos weg war, übergab Rhea Zeus der Ziege Amalthea, um ihn aufzuziehen.
Nachdem Zeus zu einem Mann herangewachsen war, wollte er seinen Vater besiegen. Zuerst sorgte er dafür, dass Kronos seine Geschwister auswürgt. Danach kämpften sie gemeinsam gegen die Titanen …
(Der Kampf der Titanen ist aber nun doch ein eigenes Thema, vielleicht muss es irgendwann, irgendwo dazu weitere Geocaches geben.)
