Geocache Description:

Emerald ash borer, or Agrilus planipennis, is an invasive pest species that is native to Asia and Eastern Russia, and it was first found in North America in 2002 in Michigan. It was brought over via ash wood used in shipping materials. It causes harm to ash trees specifically, although it has also been occasionally found in white fringetree, and it causes harm during its larval stage when it's burrowing in the tree while feeding. These burrows, or galleries, prevent the flow of nutrients through the tree, which can kill the tree. This is a species that has been known to be transported from place to place in firewood, so it is important to always use locally sourced firewood (meaning firewood that has been cut from within 50 miles of the location in which you want to burn it) and to not move firewood from place to place.
