1,2,3 - Lace up your sneakers, grab some water, maybe a pair of binoculars and enjoy the local wildlife as you stroll this beautiful park.
Weracoba park, originally know as Wildwood Park, was built in 1890 as a private, diversified amusement area. A shallow lake was constructed and a bathhouse encouraged swimming, and rentals of flat-bottom boats which promoted fishing and courting. A dance pavilion featured various local orchestras, band concerts on Sunday afternoon, and even vaudeville acts. Other activities included a small bowling alley and a zoo with deer, small monkeys, and a bear.
In 1924, the city purchased the park and Columbus High was constructed on a portion of the land. The lake was drained in 1926. We assume this is how the term ‘Lakebottom’ was coined for this area.
