Der geologische Aufbau des Mitterbergs zeigt sich an den mächtigen Pfattner Wänden. Vor 270 Millionen Jahren formten Vulkanausbrüche den Bozner Quarzporphyr. Der harte Porphyr überstand auch die vor 115.000 Jahren einsetzende und bis vor 12.000 Jahren dauernde Eiszeit, da er widerstandsfähiger war als die anderen Gesteine der Umgebung. So blieb der Mitterberg als Erhebung im Etschtal bestehen. Gletscherschliffe auf den Gesteinsoberflächen und nicht zuletzt die beiden Montiggler Seen und der Kalterer See zeugen von der Tätigkeit des Eises.
Der Große Montiggler See ist etwa 17,8 ha groß, seine Uferlinie ist 2,02 km lang. Mit einer mittleren Tiefe von 8,4 m (maximal: 11,5 m) fasst er ein Volumen von fast 1,5 Millionen m³. Das Einzugsgebiet des Sees ist ca. 2,3 km² groß. An seinem Nordostende ist der Uferverlauf teilweise felsig, am Südwestende geht das Gewässer in einen Sumpf über. Entwässert wird der See über den Angelbach.
Der Kleine Montiggler See ist etwa 5,2 ha groß, seine Uferlinie ist 890 m lang. Mit einer mittleren Tiefe von 9,9 m (maximal: 14,8 m) fasst er ein Volumen von ca. 500.000 m³. Das Einzugsgebiet des Sees ist ca. 1,25 km² groß. In den wasserreichen Jahreszeiten wird er durch einen kleinen Bach zum Großen Montiggler See hin entwässert.
