Francis Scott Key was born August 1, 1779 and is most famous for writing the Star Spangled Banner. During the War of 1812, Key was sent to negotiate the release of his American collegue, William Benes, from the British navy. Key and Colonel John Skinner were able to negotiate the release from the British, however they were not allowed to return to land until the British naval forces completed their bombardment on Fort McHenry.
From afloat, Key witnessed the day-long, overnight assult on the American fort. Unsucessful, the British left, and Key and the two other Americans were able to return to land. Inspired by what he saw, Key composed the poem "Defence of Fort M'Henry" which was widely published by newspapers and periodicals.
Only later was the poem set to the tune of an old English drinking song, "To Anacreon in Heaven" becoming "The Star-Spangled Banner." (Ironic, isn't it?)
