Geocache Description:

Corrugated Iron Structure attached to The Dubbo Rail Bridge

Erskine Villa - Macquarie Street, circa 1882 - showing the railway bridge in the background

This Structure has fascinated me since we moved to Dubbo in Oct 2014. So I decided to find out what it is all about and I have found out very little and what I information there was, the sources don't agree. The above photo from around 1882 does not show the Pump House? So here is what we have discovered;

from The "Dubbo PhotoNews"

  • Since its design by Anglo-Australian railway engineer John Whitton circa 1879 and its construction by Henry Albert Brigg circa 1880, the Dubbo railway bridge has been a pivotal link with outback New South Wales. The adjacent well and pump house were also designed and constructed at this time to provide a permanent source of water for the steam locomotives servicing the west

from The Dubbo Information Centre

  • The iron lattice girder Bridge was imported from England in pieces and erected by Benjamin Barnes in 1883-1884. It is the same design as the Wellington and Bathurst Bridges.
  • The Pumphouse, with its suction gas plant and attendant water pump, was used to fill the steam engines.

Should anybody know more, please log that information
