To the Runner
A Memorial
The cache is not at the posted coordinates, but that location is the starting point for solving this puzzle.
Who was the runner? When did he or she live, die or achieve some level of fame? Was the top of the hill ever reached?
You will find the answer (and, like me, even more questions) within 500 feet of the posted coordinates of this cache. No need to run. A pleasant stroll on the beautiful University of Utah campus should do the trick.
Start at the posted coordinates which turns out to be a small hill just north of the Union Building and search the area within 500 feet in every direction (or until you locate the answer!).
-
It is not inside a building.
-
It is not related to the Gold Medal Mile.
-
No need to spend a lot of time guessing or reading extensively. When you see it, you should know for sure, although it is slightly difficult to read. Reading glasses maybe?
Got it? Use the info to build the coordinates of the cache:
Multiply the number of letters in the runner's full name (excluding spaces) by 54 and add 11 to get ABC.
Multiply the sum of the last three digits of the four-digit year by 95 to get DEF.
The cache is at:
N 40 45.ABC
W 111 50.DEF
For muggle-resistant retrieval of the cache, sit on the flat one on the west, and casually reach under the one to the east.
Let me know if you get stuck! Enjoy the walk!
Inspiration for this puzzle came from Where Do I Start and Peculiar is as Peculiar does. It has taken four years to find a satisfactory local scenario, and I find this one very fascinating.
