Geocache Description:

Catch a ferry across to Cockatoo Island and discover the history of this amazing engineering wonderland.

Catch a ferry across to Cockatoo Island and discover the history of this amazing engineering wonderland.

The first modern warship to be built in Australia was shipped out in parts from Brittan in 1912. This gave the Cockatoo Island workers experience in building a destroyer. WWI established Cockatoo Island's reputation for ship building and docking - 250 ships refitted as wartime troop transports, 500 ships docked for maintenance and repair, 22 large ships and plenty of small vessels built, and a workforce of 4000. WWII saw an ambitious programme of warship construction, including destroyers, frigates and corvettes. Merchant ships were again converted for war service. Voyager and Vampire were built in the 1950's and in 1962 Cockatoo won the contract for the empress of Australia. Three frigates were built and in 1986 HMAS Success was the last ship to be launched from Cockatoo Island. The smaller vessels were launched from the slip ways at the North Western end of the island. This is where you will find this geocache. It is a rocky area and it can get slippery over there at times so be careful.

Good Luck!!
