Flagg Mountain Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Chonu: Almost five years to the day. Time for this group of caches to go. Thank you to everyone who visited over the years. Saw a bear cub climbing a tree not far from this cache on our descent. Whew! Glad we didn't see mama.

Happy geocaching.

Geocache Description:

Flagg Mountain in Conway was destined to be a mountain of wealthy homeowners until Franklin Land Trust purchased the property and handed it to the state to permanently protect as a wildlife management area. Walk up the driveway of homeowner defeat and find yourself some geocaching success!

Parking is available at the end of North Warger Road in Ashfield, MA. Note that the gate at the trailhead is on the town line of Ashfield and Conway.

The summit of Flagg Mountain has a nice view for you to see! When placing the geocache the vegetation was a little tall, so in some seasons the view may be even better. The area is rather clear and flat, likely the destination of a very wealthy homeowner. I wouldn't blame them, either; what a destination! There are some stone walls in the vicinity too to mark would-be boundaries. Remember to wear blaze-orange during hunting season! You are searching for a camouflaged lock-and-lock container.

The gravel road ends and becomes a dirt trail that crosses the summit ridge of Flagg Mountain into the Lucky Dog Forest, owned by the New England Forestry Foundation. Recreation possibility in that forest is not yet clear, so please do not wander out-of-bounds for this hike. There isn't too much documentation on the nearby Buckland State Forest, either, but I believe this ridge path would eventually bring you there without any [major] bushwhacking. At least you hiked almost 400 feet up for a view that can include parts of Shelburne Falls!

I had been watching this WMA for a long time out of interest to hide geocaches there, so I'm glad I finally went for a solo hike here! Near the top I became a little frantic after hiding the container as I started hearing some ominous sound. It was either a coyote pup or some type of owl, and in these parts, either story sounded likely. I enjoy the idea of hiding geocaches at mountain summits regardless of vista, ergo this geocache: Flagg Mountain.

Good Luck! Happy Caching!
