POLITICAL PICNICS
Fairfield-Gutzeit House
In June 1880, Prime Minister Sir John A. Macdonald and Sir Leonard Tilley,
Minister of Finance, were guests of honour at Reverend McWilliams’ picnic held at St. Linus Church in Bath.
Organized by Reverend McWilliams to “quietly work up Lennox for the next election”,
the picnic drew five hundred people who enjoyed brass and string musical entertainment and dinner in the pavilion.
It was at this picnic that Sir John A.
announced negotiations with a private syndicate to fund and construct the remainder of the western stretch of the national railway.
