POLITICAL FRIENDS AND RIVALS
Courthouse, Napanee
In 1873, Sir John A. Macdonald’s government was brought down by the Pacific Scandal.
The local Member of Parliament Richard J. Cartwright had parted ways with Macdonald’s Conservatives.
That year, Cartwright joined the Liberals and challenged Sir John to meet him at the nomination rally in Napanee.
On a cold November Saturday in 1873, Macdonald and Cartwright met here on the grounds of the County Courthouse before a large crowd.
Macdonald said that American interests were behind the Liberal campaign. Macdonald refused to engage in a debate.
This provoked Cartwright to challenge him to a duel. The duel never happened and in early 1874,
Cartwright was re-elected, but he never forgave Sir John A.
