Grand Trunk Station
Napanee
Since the first Grant Trunk train rumbled through Napanee in 1856, John A. Macdonald frequently
met with business clients and political friends on the platform or in the waiting room of the station.
At the peak of his career, in the small hours of the morning of June 13th, 1882,
Sir John and Lady Macdonald were met here by a huge crowd
and the Napanee Cornet Band for a week of campaigning in the Lennox constituency.
Macdonald had decided to contest the seat in Lennox himself.
In 1891, Macdonald’s private rail car was parked here, while he visited Deseronto and Napanee.
From here, he left Napanee for the last time.
