THE MACDONALD HOMESTEAD
Haybay
John A. Macdonald came from Scotland to Kingston as a child. His mother’s connection to Lt. Col. Donald Macpherson
meant that the Macdonalds moved easily into Kingston society. Hugh set up a store employing Donald’s son, Evan. In 1824,
Hugh Macdonald moved his store to Hay Bay, west of the Methodist meeting house. The family lived here until 1829
when Hugh rented the Stone Mills at Glenora. By then, John A. was attending school in Kingston.
He visited his family at the Stone Mills, likely travelling by stage. One Christmas he brought “choice spirits” for a party.
