Om järnbruket
Olofsfors bruk är ett av Sveriges mest välbevarade bruk. 1762 fick man tillstånd att bygga bruket och ungefär 100 år senare hade ett helt samhälle byggts. På bruket producerades stång- och tackjärn. P.g.a. den höga kolhalten var tackjärnet inte lämpligt för smide, men passade bra för gjutning. På bruket göt man bl.a. den milsten som idag finns i Olofsfors (se waypoint). Av stångjärnet smidde man bl.a. spik och kättingar.
Järnproduktionen krävde stora mängder kol och för att producera kol byggdes kolmilor. Kolet från en mila kunde driva masugnen i bruket i ungefär två dagar. Arbetet med att bygga och bränna en kolmila kunde ta ungefär ett halvår.
Så småningom började skogsindustrin växa och sågar började byggas, vilket ledde till att många järnbruk lades ned. Olofsfors bruk blev dock uppköpt av Nordmalings Ångsåg AB (NÅAB), vilket till stor del berodde på att NÅAB ville komma åt den skog Olofsfors bruk ägde. Bruket började tillverka kättingar för timmerflottning och så småningom övergick man till att tillverka band till skogsmaskiner.
Idag är bruket ett museum, men i lokalerna bredvid tillverkar Olofsfors AB bl.a. band till skogsmaskiner.
2005 sändes SVT:s luciatåg från byggnaden där cachen är gömd.

About the ironworks
Olofsfors Works is one of the most well-preserved works in Sweden. In 1762, the required building permissions were obtained and the building of the works began. About 100 years later, a whole village had been built. The works produced bar and pig iron. Due to the high levels of coal, the pig iron could not be used for smithworks but was suitable for casting. The milestone in Olofsfors (see waypoint) was, among other things, made at the works. From the bar iron, nails and chains were made.
The iron production required large amounts of coal and in order to produce the needed coal, charcoal stacks were built and burned. The amount of coal that could be obtained from one charcoal stack was enough to operate the blast furnace of the ironwork for about two days. It took about half a year to build and burn a charcoal stack.
Eventually, the forestry began growing and sawmills were built, resulting in many ironworks shutting down. Olofsfors Works, however, was taken over by Nordmalings Ångsåg AB (Nordmaling’s Steam Sawmill, NÅAB), mainly because NÅAB wanted the forest that Olofsfors Works owned. The works began producing chains for log-driving and eventually, they started the production of conveyor belts.
Today, the works are a museum but in the premises nearby, Olofsfors AB produces i.a. conveyor belts.
In 2005, the national public TV broadcaster SVT broadcasted a Lucia procession from the building next to GZ.
