So my Geocaching partner, MOTgeo, and I have finally decided to start placing caches. He selected a multi cache for his first, the excellent "Go Fish - Reel it In" (which is very near the parking coordinates for this cache!). I decided to go the traditional route for my first cache. I didn't want to do a park and grab, for my first, so I looked for something that would be a little challenging. Now to find the perfect spot!
After a bit of searching, I finally found it. It's only about 10 miles from the provided parking coordinates! I found this impassible wall of thorns to hide the cache in, and unbelievably, the cache is less than 1 foot from a hornets nest AND a yellow jacket nest, Also, I can't guarantee the same experience, but hiking to and placing the cache, I managed to pick up 47 ticks.
Just kidding!
The hike is about 5-10 minutes from the parking lot depending on your speed. You will be in the woods, so dress accordingly. Terrain is fairly flat, but a little elevation change will occur. Tree cover will play a little havoc with your satellite reception, so when you get close, just ditch the GPS and jump right in. You're in for a WHOLE lot of fun!! Coordinate are as close as we could get and we averaged with 3 different GPS devices over 2 different visits. Use your Geosense when you get close!
This is my first cache, so I appreciate any feedback on the D/T ratings. I'm going to start this at a 3.5, given the number of possible hiding spots and the tree cover's impact on the GPS readings. I suspect this won't be much of a challenge for the more experienced cachers, but newcomers may have a tough time of it.
Geocache is placed with permission in Newtown park. Please follow all park rule while hunting this cache.
Happy caching!
