Kaukolynės atragis yra būdingoje Ventos vidurupio lygumos, kurios duburiu teka Ventos upė, dalyje, suformuotoje Nemuno apledėjimo Baltijos stadijos Vidurio Lietuvos ledyninio liežuvio slinkties metu.
Atragis – raiški erozinė reljefo forma. Atragio ilgis yra 70 m, o plotis nuo 2–5 m jo smaigalyje iki 25 m jo gale. Atragio aukštis nuo griovos dugno jos vidurinėje dalyje – apie 6 m, o iš Ventos pusės šlaito aukštis apie 12 m. Atragis susiformavo Ventos upės šoninės erozijos ir bevardės griovos gilinamosios erozijos procesų dėka. Atragio ilgoji ašis yra orientuota į pietryčius, kryptimi statmena paskutiniojo ledyno slinkimo krypčiai. Kaukolynės atragis ir jo gretimybės pilnai reprezentuoja Ventos slėnio geomorfologinę įvairovę, kurią sudaro limnoglacialinė ir moreninė lyguma, viršsalpinės terasos (pirmoji ir antroji), salpa, upės meandros ir senvagės, griova ir pats erozinis atragis.
Nors Kaukolynės atragis yra trumpesnis nei Avižlio, tačiau jis yra labai išraiškingas, todėl Kaukolynės atragis galėtų būti laikomas tipišku geomorfologiniu tokių reljefo formų etalonu. Šiuo požiūriu Kaukolynės atragis turi didelę ne tik mokslinę bet ir pažintinę vertę. Pabrėžtina ir atragio formavimosi sąsaja su šios Ventos slėnio atkarpos raida, jį ribojančios griovos galima sąsaja su lineamentu (neotektoniniu lūžiu). Labai svarbiu gamtinio paveldo aspektu ir jo sudedamąja dalimi reikėtų laikyti atragio ir jo aplinkinės vietovės natūralumą, technogeninių objektų nebuvimą, beveik visose nuo atragio atsiveriančiose panoramose matyti tik natūralūs vaizdai.
