Geocache Description:

No. 1 Police Stables & Newcastle Gaol – museum precinct

By 1854 Toodyay had a Mounted Police Force, under Constable Gee, and a Native Police Force as well as Pensioner Guards.

(Constable Gee was the brother of my Great Great Great Grandfather, Frederick ‘Walter’ Gee who was also a policeman(from former owner dimor))

The Newcastle Gaol was built in 1865 to replace two previous lock-ups. The first was in old Toodyay (now West Toodyay) and the second was in the Newcastle Convict Hiring Depot located on the land behind  the Gaol, where the Toodyay Shire Offices are now. The Gaol was designed by architect Richard Roach Jewell, who was responsible for the Pensioners’ Barracks in St Georges Terrace, Perth of which only the entrance arch now stands.

It operated as a gaol until 1907.  After that it became a private residence; the last family moved out around 1945. It was restored and opened as a museum in 1962.

The township of Newcastle was named in 1860 but was changed to Toodyay in 1910, due to confusion of mail deliveries with Newcastle in NSW. The original town of Toodyay  was then re-named West Toodyay.

Moondyne Joe was never imprisoned at this Gaol, but at the Convict Hiring Depot.  He was imprisoned for illegally branding a brumby but he escaped.

The current Police Stables were built in 1891 and replaced earlier stables built on the same site.

Both these buildings have been restored over the years for us to enjoy today. PLEASE take the time to have a good look around the two buildings here as they are a part of our Western Australian history.
