These structures, gatehouses or "pill boxes", are now the entrance to a new build estate. They used to be the gates to the ROF Barnbow Tank factory. It was privatised and sold to Vickers.
On the North gatehouse there is a blue plaque put up to comemerate the factory as it is vanishing under housing.
The Plaque Reads
Barnbow Royal Ordnance Factory was built 1939-40 to make armaments for the Seond World War. Eploying at its peak 300 workers inlcuding 2000 women, it produced around 9000 guns- 6 and 25 pounders, 3.7 inch anti-aircraft guns, 40mm Bofors and 17 pounders for Sherman tanks. Between 1945 and closure in 1999, over 4000 Centurion, Chieftan and Challenger tanks were built here.
Anyone who lived locally when the factory was in operation will vividly remember the roar of the tank engines as they were run around the test track, and the excitement of watching these huge machines of war being transported out down local streets.
The cache itself is a small cliplock box
