Lough Ross Amenity Area
There are picnic tables and a basket ball court located here. There are public toilets but I have not seen them open in several visits. There is a public slipway however jet skis may not be used on the lough. There are ample parking spaces along the shore. It is a popular fishing venue.
Letterbox
This is a letterbox cache. You will need to use a combination of your GPS and other skills to reach the final location. The coordinates on the page are not those of the cache but are simply a place to start from.
Stage 1 (N 54° 04.770 W 006° 38.413 )
From the starting coordinates proceed the short distance to stage 1 and some local government instructions concerning watercraft. Proceed RTS.U meters at XY.Z degrees to Stage 2.
R=3/4/1 T=1/1/1 S=4/1/3 U=3/6/1 X=7/1/1 Y=(6/1/1-5/2/3) Z=7/1/5
The checksum for R+T+S+U=28, the checksum for X+Y+Z=24
Stage 2
You should now be able to see a gate that is in the water. Depending on the water level this is going to be a very easy calculation or you going to have to feel below the water line to check. A=the number of horizontal bars. B=the number of vertical bars. C=AXB
Proceed (Cx11)+(Bx2)+0.64 meters on a bearing of ((A cubed)+3.35) degrees to the final location.
The Cache
The cache is secured in place and please do not remove the container, simply open it. There is no pen so bring your own. If you do not have a pen take a photo of the logbook to prove your find. Visits which indicate the log was not signed and offer no other proof of the visit will be deleted.
There is an ink stamp in the cache. This is not a swap item and needs to be left there. There is no inkpad so if you want to take away an impression you'll have to bring one.
The cache is a small container. It is camo'd. It does blend in well. It was placed using a kayak and swimming in the lough is not encouraged. It would be a long swim too. As with any water based activity there are risks so safety first.
If using a boat for this or other caches on the lough be aware that the lough is quite shallow round the shore and the islands and even using a kayak I grounded some distance from land on many occasions.
It is not possible to get the cache from your kayak, or if it is then it must have been raining for a month before you got here. This is designed to be one of the harder finds on the lough so no hint.
Kayak/Boat Hire
I dont know of any boat or kayak rental business that services the Lough.
