Herbert Hoover & Henry Wallace. :
 

  • Herbert Hoover, the 31st President of the United States, was born in West Branch, Iowa. He was orphaned at age 9.
  • Hoover entered Stanford University during it's inaugural year, and lays claim to being the University's first student, having been the first student to sleep in the dormitory before classes started.
  • During and after World War One, Hoover organized food relief for war victims in Europe and ran campaigns for the war effort in the US.
  • Hoover was Secretary of Commerce prior to becoming president. The last cabinet member to become president. One of two presidents elected without having held a prior elected position.

               

  • Henry A. Wallace was Secretary of Agriculture and Vice President under President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Secretary of Commerce under both Presidents Roosevelt and Truman.
  • He was born in Orient, Iowa and lived in several cities in Iowa.
  • George Washington Carver stayed with the Wallace family while he attended Iowa State University. Wallace often accompanied Carver on nature walks to identify native prairie plants.
  • Carver's influence led to Wallace experimenting with plant cross-breeding and hybridization.
  • Wallace founded the Hi-Bred Corn Company, later becoming Pioneer Hi-Bred.
