George Gallup & The Gallup Poll:
- George Gallup was born in Jefferson, IA. He founded the American Institute of Public Opinion, also known as the Gallup Poll.
- He studied journalism at the University of Iowa and was a professor at Drake University, Northwestern, and Columbia.
- His interest in public opinions began when his mother-in-law Ola Babcock Miller, ran for office to become the first woman as Iowa Secretary of State.
- To remain objective and independent, Gallup refused to conduct any polling that was paid for or sponsored by any special interest groups.
- Gallup's polls that correctly predicted presidential elections made his company a leader in American polling and research.
- His childhood home in Jefferson, Iowa, is octagonal and was a station on the Underground Railroad.
