- Mason City native Meredith Willson is best known for his Broadway musical The Music Man.
- Willson was a musician, composer, playright, and songwriter.
- His song "You & I" became a number 1 billboard hit in 1941 for fellow Iowan Glenn Miller.
- The Music Man was influenced by his hometown of Mason City, which hosts a marching band festival every spring, where it is common to hear 76 Trombones in the big parade.
