The Amanas:

  • Iowa's Amana Colonies are the decendents of an 18th century German religious sect that broke away from the Luteran Church.
  • The Amanas developed with communal living and a strong focus on close relationships as a means to assist their spiritual lives.
  • The villages set up industries, such as a woolen mill, and vineyards, which continue today.
  • In the 1930s, the community underwent a "Great Change," which ended the communal living.
  • The villages are a tourist attraction which host events and reenactments. Shops in the villages sell locally made goods.
  • The Amana villages are not related to the Amish communities.
