Karl King & Glenn Miller:
 

  • Marching band composer Karl King settled in Fort Dodge, Iowa after an early career that included being bandmaster of the Barnum & Bailey Circus band and the Grand Army Band.
  • King is best known for composing "Barnum and Bailey's Favorite," circus march. He composed over 300 pieces.
  • King and fellow Iowan Meredith Willson conducted songs at the largest mass band recorded, with over 13,000 musicians performing at the University of Minnesota stadium.

               

  • Popular big band musician and composer Glenn Miller was born in Clarinda, Iowa.
  • He was the best-selling recording artist from 1939 to 1943.
  • In 1941 he had a number one Billboard hit "You & I," composed by fellow Iowan Meredith Willson.
  • Too old for the draft during World War II, he volunteered for service and was allowed to put together the Army Air Force Band,  entertaining troops across Europe in over 800 performances.
  • His plane disappeared over the English Channel in 1944, never to be found.
