Snake Alley & High Trestle:

  • Snake Alley, located in Burlington, Iowa, is one of the curviest roads in the world.
  • The alley was once recognized by Ripley's Believe It Or Not as the Crookedest Street In The World.
  • The alley consists of five half-turns and two quarter-turns in a 285 foot stretch with a 21% grade.
  • The curves have 1100 degrees of turn, more than San Francisco's Lombard Street..
  • The road is one-way downhill except for local bicycle races that go up the hill.

  • The High Trestle Trail Bridge is a 13 story tall, half mile long pedestrian and bicycle bridge over the Des Moines River near Madrid, Iowa.
  • Originally a railroad trestle, the bridge is the most iconic representation of the Rails to Trails program in Iowa.
  • The bridge has steel "frames" that represent the support structures found in nearby historic coal mines.
  • The bridge is one of the tallest and longest bicycle trail bridges in the world.
