Merle Haye, Marion Crandell, & Robert Losey:
 

  • Merle Haye, from Glidden, was one of the first US soldiers killed in World War One when Germans overran the trench he was in on Nov 3, 1917.
  • Marion Crandell, from Cedar Rapids, was the first American woman killed in active service in World War One. She died on Mar 27, 1918 when a shell exploded at the canteen where she worked.
  • Robert Losey, from Andrew, Iowa, was the first American military casualty of World War Two. He was killed in a German bombardment on April 21, 1940 while assisting in the evacuation of American diplomats from Norway to Sweden.
