- Immigrant communities developed across the state, providing the unique foods and festivals in towns and cities across the state.
- Dutch in Pella and Orange City.
- Scandinavians in Elkhorn and Decorah
- Czech and Slavik groups in Cedar Rapids
- Irish near Emmetsburg.
- African-Americans arrived to escape slavery before the Civil War and to settle after the war and during economic migration periods.
- 20th century immigrant groups mainly settled in Iowa's cities: Italians, Cambodians, Vietnamese, Sudanese, Bosnians.
