  • Iowa has a history of being a place for immigrants to settle
  • During the first 50 years of statehood, more than 20% of the Iowa population was foreign-born.
  • Immigrant communities developed across the state, providing the unique foods and festivals in towns and cities across the state.
  • Dutch in Pella and Orange City.
  • Scandinavians in Elkhorn and Decorah
  • Czech and Slavik groups in Cedar Rapids
  • Irish near Emmetsburg.
  • African-Americans arrived to escape slavery before the Civil War and to settle after the war and during economic migration periods.
  • 20th century immigrant groups mainly settled in Iowa's cities: Italians, Cambodians, Vietnamese, Sudanese, Bosnians.
